About
Register here to express interest in volunteering for the 2023 Tax Season as a Tax Preparer. By registering now, in early November you will receive an invitation to training.
For 18 years, United Way of Central Alabama has helped thousands of low-to-moderate income people each season by preparing and filling their tax returns free of charge, bringing back as much as 2 million dollars of refunds each year. With recent changes to tax laws and expansion of tax credits, the need for this service is bigger than ever.
Join our team and help our neighbors get free trustworthy assistance at tax time to claim the credits they are due and connect with other United Way services that can help them reach their goals.
Tax Preparers complete a free 8-hour Tax Certification training and IRS open book test to prepare to work one-on-one with clients (socially distantly or by telephone) to file their taxes through United Way's Tax Center. Volunteers engage with clients and ask questions to ensure accurate and complete returns are filed. Throughout the process, volunteer preparers have access to on-site tax specialists to answer questions related to filing returns. Tax Preparers are asked to volunteer at least 24 hours this season.
Register here for our free live online tax law and software training, with dates beginning in November. These trainings will help you complete your open book IRS volunteer Certification.
