End Child Hunger in Alabama

Rachel Busbee

I have read some of the articles surrounding food insecurity and have learned so much. I am shocked to learn that so many adults and children struggle with food insecurity. It was so helpful to read all of the resources available for kids and adults statewide.

I spent some time on Perusall and saw an article with a Ted talk by Sam Krass entitled Want kids to learn well? Feed them well. I googled the video so that I could watch it because I could not get it to play. Sam did a great job at explaining the importance of feeding kids so well and how it benefits them in the long run.

I was able to login to Perusall and watch the Ted talk on The underlying racism of America’s food system. I really enjoyed the talk and the information on how different food availability is in so many different areas of the world. It was telling to hear her story and how different her food availability is from mine.

I have been trying to finished up my hours for this semester and unfortunately airtable was being weird with me. So, I spent most of the day on Perusall, with about an hour on airtable. Below is what I read and discussed with others on Perusall!

- Hunger in Alabama
- Facts about child hunger in Alabama
- 11 facts about hunger in the U.S.
- Food Security and why it matters
- Food Insecurity and Pediatric Obesity
- HER summer feeding
- Open AccessEditorial
- The School Nutrition and Meal Cost Study-I
- HER CEP Policy
- The underlying racism of America’s food system (video)
- How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime
- Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in COVID-19 Among School-Aged Children: Are We Doing Enough
- Food Insecurity and Assistance
- What Are Social Workers Bringing to the Table?
- Food Insecurity and SNAP Participation in the LGBT Community

I am glad I got to read about these things. It was really informational and I will carry these resources into my career. I will use the rest of my hours for airtable working on this awesome spreadsheet! Thank you ECHA for gathering these resources for us! It was very interesting to read!
