This day I only got to volunteer for an hour because most of the patients were in recovery and were not ready to see anyone yet. The patients I did see were wonderful! The nurses are always so helpful and choose the patients who they think would benefit the most from having someone come by their room.
Although this was only orientation, I enjoyed being able to meet Mrs. Watkins and seeing Dr. Hitchcock. I came in nervous for this semester and not knowing what to expect but I left eager to begin soon! I can't wait to have new experiences to shape me as a person and a social worker.
I helped Mrs. Weaver complete some missing paperwork and I was delighted to be able to see her again before the break and talk to her. She has been so helpful in making sure I got enough hours and was nice enough to let me come by on this day to finish off my needed hours.
Since I volunteered in the afternoon, I find not being too tired to go volunteer to be challenging. I knew I needed to go no matter what, but my energy tends to crash around 2 pm which is the only time I can go after class.
My key takeaway from this day was being grateful for Mrs. Weaver and the opportunity to work with her and Camp Fire as my service-learning for this semester.
