I have read some of the articles surrounding food insecurity and have learned so much. I am shocked to learn that so many adults and children struggle with food insecurity. It was so helpful to read all of the resources available for kids and adults statewide.
I spent some time on Perusall and saw an article with a Ted talk by Sam Krass entitled Want kids to learn well? Feed them well. I googled the video so that I could watch it because I could not get it to play. Sam did a great job at explaining the importance of feeding kids so well and how it benefits them in the long run.
I was able to login to Perusall and watch the Ted talk on The underlying racism of America’s food system. I really enjoyed the talk and the information on how different food availability is in so many different areas of the world. It was telling to hear her story and how different her food availability is from mine.
Worked on calling grocery stores and gas stations to update resources and find out if they take WIC and food stamps.
Today I finished my first assignment of updating Jefferson, Clay and Clarke County food banks. I was able to call and speak with several of the directors of the different food banks and they were very willing to give updates for their food banks and seemed to appreciate the effort to keep them updated. The few that did not answer I left a voicemail and a few I had to email. I had to stay organized to keep track of who I had called and who I was awaiting phone calls or emails from. I feel accomplished having finished my first assignment and am eagerly awaiting another. This has been great at practicing professionalism on the phone. I have really enjoyed this service learning, a little different from hands on, but necessary.
Today I spent time looking for websites of the listed food banks for Jefferson counties and made some calls to verify distribution days.
I was able to login to Perusall and watch the CBS documentary on Hunger. It was very informative on WIC and the ways that food has always been distributed throughout the world. It is sad to see how widespread hunger is.
