Impacts
I enjoyed updating the information for the different counties on Airtable for Senior Nutrition and Food Bank. I love that I can use Airtable as a future resource for my clients as well that might struggle from food insecurity. The most challenging part of the service learning was calling the different agencies, some of which would answer the phone, and some would not. Some individuals would also have an attitude when you try to ask them for the operation hours or the type of service they provide. My takeaway from this day is to continue to advocate and put in effort for my clients when it comes to helping them with resources the best way that I can.
On September 29, 2022, I completed .65 hours on Air Table for Senior Nutrition. One of the counties that I completed on September 29 was Coosa County which consisted of three agencies. The three agencies were Goodwater Senior Center, Rockford Senior Center and West Coosa Senior Center. For the second county, I only completed two agencies which were Atmore Senior Nutrition Center and Flomaton Senior Nutrition Center. There wasn’t really anything that stood out to me for me to have a favorite experience. The most challenging part was that some of the individuals that answered the phone were very rude when it came to giving out the information such as the days and time of operation or a contact name, for example that was one individual that told me that I was asking to many questions and that was enough information then hung up on me. My key take away is to still try to remain positive, and to follow the code of ethics, even if the individual who answers the phone is rude.
Orientation
On April 8, 2022, I did not really learn anything other than how the students would respond to certain situations that might happen to them or their friends. We also only had the chance to interact with second graders, while the third and first graders were either testing or in P.E. I mostly enjoyed getting to know the students and Ms./Mrs. Vitch. I also enjoyed getting to know my two classmates that I volunteered with. I was also very shocked when one of the students gave me a hug for it being our last volunteering session, which really made my day. I believe the most challenging was getting the children to calm down after getting too excited about the candy that one of the volunteers brought for Easter or telling them constantly to not talk while others are talking. My key takeaway from this day is that I really enjoyed volunteering with Bridge Ways and at West Hill and that I will miss volunteering with the students.
