Strengthen your resume and demonstrate to employers your skills at applying tax law, using tax software and working with customers to complete accurate tax returns.  Free training is provided by United Way to help you complete the IRS certification required to serve as a Volunteer Tax Preparer.

This internship is an excellent opportunity to:

  • Learn about United Way of Central Alabama and its community impact.
  • Gain hands-on experience with the nationwide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.
  • Build professional skills while making a meaningful difference in your community.

United Way's Free Tax Preparation works closely with the Internal Revenue Service and other qualified partners to provide free income tax preparation to individuals earning $54,000 or less.  Tax returns are prepared by IRS-Certified Preparers and filed online through secure IRS systems. As an intern, you will play a key role in serving as a Volunteer Tax Preparer and directly supporting families in our community.


Responsibilities


Main responsibilities include the following:

  • Complete free IRS training and certification to become an IRS Certified Volunteer Preparer.
  • Prepare accurate income tax returns for clients in the community.
  • Provide excellent customer service, including intake, explaining next steps, and answering basic questions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive client information.
  • Support general site operations.

Qualifications


The ideal candidate is comfortable interacting with customers (in-person and on the phone) and is interested in learning about tax preparation.  Some helpful skills include the following:

  • Interest in Business, Accounting, Finance, Public Service, or related fields.
  • Strong communication skills, including active listening and clear explanation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Professionalism, reliability, and a willingness to learn.
  • Passion for helping the community.
